Paralympian Jonathan Broom-Edwards will be opening Whittlesey’s new Aldi store later this month, it has been announced.

The gold medalist will be cutting the ribbon at the store on Eastrea Road – and free produce will be available for the first 30 customers through the door.

The official opening will take place on June 29 at 8am.

Michelle Wilson, the store’s manager, said: “We can’t wait to open the doors to the new store in Whittlesey.

“It’s set to be a special day and having ParalympicsGB hero Jonathan Broom-Edwards join us will make it a morning to remember.”

The store has created 30 jobs, and it is still possible to apply for positions.

Aldi works in partnership with ParalympicsGB and Jonathan Broom-Edwards won a gold medal in the Men’s High Jump - T64 final at the Tokyo 2020 Paralymic Games.

He said: “I’m so excited to be opening Aldi’s new store; it will be great to chat to customers and a lovely way for me to thank Aldi for its support of ParalympicsGB.”

Consumer group Which? recently confirmed Aldi is the UK’s cheapest supermarket for 2022 - the second year in a row that it has been awarded the title.

The new Whittlesey store is also calling on local charities and foodbanks to register with Neighbourly, a platform which links businesses to charitable organisations in the community.

They will then be able to collect surplus food and other perishables from the store.

It is also possible for charities to partner with the store by emailing aldi@neighbourly.com.
