2023 heritage festival in the town of March was huge success

Organisers say they want to thank everyone who took part: the volunteers who organised and hosted the event and everyone who came along to support and enjoy the events.

Heritage Open Days are an annual opportunity to celebrate history, architecture and culture across the country and in March, the events were free of charge.

Places which usually charge for entrance were free and those which are usually open, offered special events, talks, tours, displays, walks, and exhibitions.

"This was the first time since Covid lockdowns that we have held the festival in the town and March groups and organisations took part and shared their buildings and activities," said Jennifer Lawler from the March Society.

"This year the theme was ‘Creativity Unwrapped’ and March had 16 entries on the national Heritage Open Days website for 19 events, with particular interest in creativity, architecture, photography, storytelling and displays. The very variable weather was a challenge at times."

Those taking part included March Library, March Museum, Centenary Baptist, St John the Evangelist, St Peter’s, St Wendreda’s and St Mary’s churches. The Ship Inn held a display and there was stories in Ye Olde Griffin Hotel.

There were some new walks which included talking about buildings past and present in North March and in The Causeway. Tours took place in Rings End nature reserve. There was a photo walk in West End and a walk in Station Road Cemetery.

"We are very grateful to everyone concerned for all the pleasure, interesting activities, displays and information given to visitors, both local and from across the country, from the south coast to the north," added Jennifer.

"We can take pride in our town of March, its heritage, its buildings and its people. If you enjoyed events please share your experiences."
