With the power of an app on their phones, Aldi shoppers in Cambridgeshire have managed to save 9,600 meals from going to waste over the past year.

Aldi uses an app called Too Good To Go, which allows shoppers to purchase a discounted bag of surplus food from the shop at the end of the day.

The aim of the app is to stop excess food being chucked away and wasted.

In Cambridgeshire, app users have so far purchased 9,600 Too Good to Go bags from their local Aldi stores - this is the equivalent to £64,000 in savings.

The bags from Aldi contain a range of grocery products that are approaching their sell-by or use-by dates.

They cost £3, and are filled with £10 worth of food that could feed a family.

The Aldi bags have proven very popular amongst app users in Cambridgeshire, along with other local supermarkets.

Morrisons, Iceland and the Co-op all use the app too.
