Help is needed to prevent a Fenland village from losing its playground, which is said to be "in urgent need of repair".

The play area in Doddington was originally funded by Sure Start, which has since closed in our area.

Therefore, the Benwick Road Recreation Ground Playground is now the responsibility of the recreation committee.

But, without help to look after it, the committee say they will have no other option, but to dismantle the playground.

Emily Shepherd, of the committee, said: "As with the pavilion and field, no funds are received from an outside source to help with maintenance.

"We are a charity and the facility is managed entirely by volunteers."

She added that the playground has now reached the stage that it is "in urgent need of repair, ideally complete replacement.

"Much of the equipment does not meet today's safety standards, the flooring has shrunk and become brittle and the wooden framed swing is beginning to split.

"We do not have the funds to make these repairs. We are a small committee and do not have the spare time to commit to raising extra funds, applying for grants or obtaining quotations for the work."

The committee is now looking for help in several areas:

  1. "Could you be part of a team to plan the work and organise fundraising? The recreation committee will offer guidance and support and can advise on possible avenues to apply for grants, but the project would be your responsibility.
  2. "We are not looking for advice on what we could do or how we could raise money, we are looking for people to commit their time to take action.

  3. "If you are prepared to be involved with this project and save Benwick Road playground, please contact us."

Mrs Shepherd added: "If nobody steps forward to help in the next couple of months, the committee will have no other option but to dismantle the playground."
