The Horsefair Shopping Centre car park could be demolished to make way for a new supermarket, an application to Fenland planners reveals.
NewRiver (Wisbech) Ltd explains it wants to build “a foodstore” on the site and has submitted an initial application focused on demolishing the car park first.
Documents say the company wants to determine from Fenland District Council whether prior approval is needed when it comes to the demolition method used in the project.
It also wants to know if any parts of the site will need to be restored afterwards.
This current application – validated by planners on July 8, 2024 – is just for the existing multi-storey car park.
Details of the foodstore have not been revealed at this early stage.
If approved, the proposal says the work is expected to start at the start of 2025 and will last around three months.
It also explains waste materials from the site will be recycled where possible.
The multi-storey car park is located next to the Freedom Bridge roundabout and leads visitors directly to The Horsefair Shopping Centre.
The shopping centre was officially opened in 1988 by Noel Edmunds.
