The Peterborough and Cambridgeshire Trading Standards has taken the decision to approve the use of an AI age verifier app.
AgeAI has received "primary authority approval" by the Trading Standards organisation, meaning it has been endorsed for use by retailers.
The app provides "automated and accurate" facial age estimation. The company behind the app, Privately SA, say that it has identified 100 per cent of 18-20-year-olds as being under 25 years of age.
The company has said that the app can, "automate age checks, support field staff, and more effectively avoid the costly fines that come from selling age-inappropriate products to minors."
Mark Oliver, the Business Hub Manager for Peterborough and Cambridgeshire Trading Standards said: "Providing minors with age-appropriate user experiences is a major priority in 2024 and beyond.
"The AgeAI solution is a really good example of how technology can be adapted to meet the needs of businesses working in increasingly regulated and challenging retail environments."
