Speedway rider Lewis Kerr is in a stable condition at Addenbrooke's Hospital following a high-speed accident in Peterborough.
King's Lynn Stars' Kerr crashed riding for his lower-level club Newcastle at the Premier League Fours meeting this afternoon. The event was stopped, and subsequently abandoned, with the 25-year-old needing more than an hour's medical treatment at the East of England Showground track.
The Heacham-based rider was then flown to Cambridge by air ambulance where he remains in an induced coma.
A statement from the British Speedway Promoters' Association (BSPA) said: 'Lewis is in a stable condition and is in the very best place for care and attention.
'There was no alternative but to abandon the meeting. All of the riders were in no state to continue after seeing what had happened.
'Our thoughts are with Lewis and his family, and we wish him a full, successful and speedy recovery.
'Our information at this stage is that he is in an induced coma at Addenbrooke's Hospital, where he will get the best possible care.'
Kerr is believed to have suffered severe head injuries as a result of the sickening incident which has stunned those involved with the motorsport.
